Bronxville Junior Abby Fong Earns Prestigious Assistant Concertmaster Seat at NYSSMA All-State

Bronxville High School junior Abby Fong achieved an extraordinary milestone this week at the NYSSMA All-State Music Conference, one of New York State’s most selective and esteemed music festivals. Thousands of student musicians statewide audition for All-State each year, with only the highest scorers earning a coveted place in the ensembles.

Abby not only secured a spot in the All-State Symphony Orchestra but was also awarded the prestigious position of Assistant Concertmaster –– the number two violinist in the entire orchestra. This honor is exceptionally competitive, as the Symphony Orchestra draws top musicians from across New York’s 11th and 12th grades. Her selection reflects remarkable technical mastery, deep musical expression, and exemplary leadership.

Throughout the conference in Rochester, Abby rehearsed and performed under distinguished conductors, preparing works that showcased both nuance and virtuosity. This year’s repertoire included selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Cool Cat, a contemporary and technically demanding piece by living composer Adam Schoenberg.

Abby’s achievement is a point of tremendous pride for the Bronxville School community. Her success represents years of dedication, countless hours of practice, and the support of educators who have nurtured her musical growth.

She is a member of Bronxville’s orchestra led by director Matthew Dell, whose mentorship and guidance have played an important role in her craft. Abby also trains with her private instructor, Anca Nicolau, whose expertise has helped her further refine her technique and artistry.

Mr. Dell emphasized the significance of Abby’s accomplishment, noting that her leadership role in the Symphony Orchestra is “a tremendous achievement and a testament to Abby’s talent and dedication.”

Abby’s All-State honor follows her recent role as Assistant Concertmaster in the Area All-State Symphony Orchestra at SUNY Purchase last month, further highlighting her musical excellence.

Having studied violin since the age of four, Abby has earned numerous accolades, including first prize in the senior division of the Ani Kavafian String Competition and finalist placement in the Danbury Concerto Competition. She has performed at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as a concerto competition winner and has also appeared as a soloist with The Symphony of Westchester.

Beyond her solo achievements, Abby is an active chamber musician, having performed more than 40 public concerts as part of string quartets and a piano trio. She has also led and participated in outreach concerts at senior centers, performing for more than 1,000 residents.

Abby attributes her success to the dedicated mentorship of Ms. Nicolau, the support of the Bronxville School music program led by Mr. Dell, and her passion for performing.

Bronxville MS/HS Band Director Uma Karkala traveled with Abby to the All-State Conference from December 4–7, supporting her throughout the event.

Bronxville High School extends its warmest congratulations to Abby on this outstanding honor. Her success highlights the strength of Bronxville’s music program and reflects the passion, discipline, and excellence she brings to her craft each day.
