Summer Reading for Incoming 6th-8th Graders
Required Reading
Directions: All incoming middle school students are required to read two books over the summer:
- Community Read: The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers
- Free Choice
Community Read: Required for all students grades 6-8.
We are hoping that by turning summer reading into a collective experience rather than an isolated assignment, we can foster a sense of community and excitement about reading that carries into the new school year. When everyone reads the same book, it gives students a common topic to discuss when they return in September, making classroom conversations more engaging, even for those who may not usually participate. We plan to have a Celebration of Reading in September centered around the book.
Note: Books have been purchased for all incoming 6th graders; incoming 7th and 8th graders must obtain their own copy. Sixth graders must return the book in September.
The Eyes and the Impossible by Dave Eggers
Newbery Award winning book about a dog who, while living in a large state park with other animals, serves as the protector of their home and the natural world around him. The story offers a unique perspective that encourages readers to think differently about animals, humans, and the environment. The novel explores important themes such as empathy, responsibility, and the relationship between humans and nature, while also encouraging critical thinking.
Free Choice: Required for all students grades 6-8.
Students must read a second book of their choosing over the summer. This book can be from any genre. We encourage students to discuss possible book choices with their parents before choosing.
